What is the Network?
The Bioamazonía Network – Research and Innovation Institutes on Biodiversity – is a regional initiative born from the consensus that cooperation and collective action are essential to face the social, economic, and environmental challenges of the Amazon biome.
Impulsada con el apoyo técnico y financiero del programa Amazonia Siempre, coordinado por el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), la Red surge en un contexto de múltiples crisis globales que afectan de manera acelerada las condiciones de vida en el planeta y, en particular, en la Amazonía.
The Amazon is an indivisible system, extending from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. It harbors exceptional biodiversity, still largely unknown, and is home to numerous indigenous peoples and communities whose ways of life, knowledge, and practices are deeply linked to the conservation of the territory.
En este escenario, la Red impulsa una forma de investigar y actuar en red, que articula ciencia, tecnología e innovación entre instituciones amazónicas de distintos países, en diálogo continuo con los saberes locales. Su propósito es generar conocimiento relevante y soluciones concretas que contribuyan a la conservación y el uso sostenible de la Amazonía, fortaleciendo al mismo tiempo las capacidades de quienes la habitan y la estudian.
Vision
The vision is to be a leading and globally recognized network for research and innovation on biodiversity through interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and cross-border collaboration schemes among institutes, governments, businesses, and communities, promoting and contributing to the conservation of the Amazon through science, technology, and innovation with a focus on the bioeconomy, as pillars of sustainable development.
Mission
The mission of the Bioamazon Network is to integrate and strengthen the capabilities of its members, promote the generation and exchange of knowledge on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and the development and transfer of innovative technologies and solutions for the Amazonian bioeconomy.
Governance
The Bioamazon Network has a governance structure that ensures decision-making, coordination of its activities, and articulation among its members and partners with regional representation and criteria of transparency and collaboration.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the annual meeting of the representatives of the Network's members. Each institution participates through its highest authority or a designated representative with voting rights, and may include additional non-voting participants.
The Steering Committee may invite experts and representatives from external organizations to participate in meetings, upon proposal by members.
The Network's official languages are Spanish and Portuguese. In the event that members from countries with other official languages are incorporated, the Steering Committee will evaluate their adoption.
La Asamblea busca tomar decisiones por consenso. Cuando esto no es posible, las decisiones se adoptan por mayoría de votos, mediante votación abierta o secreta según corresponda.
Steering committee
The Steering Committee is composed of one representative from each founding member institute and one representative from the IDB. It is responsible for defining priorities, promoting collaborative initiatives, establishing partnerships, and mobilizing resources.
Among its functions are the creation of working groups, the identification of capacity-building needs, and the development of the annual operational and budgetary plan.
She also leads the relationship with donors and strategic partners.
The Presidency and Vice Presidency are held by members of the Committee, with one-year terms and representation from different countries.
Technical Secretariat
The Technical Secretariat coordinates the implementation of the Network's agenda, including the organization of meetings, training sessions, and activities, as well as articulation among members and partners.
During the initial phase, this function is exercised by the IDB within the framework of the technical cooperation supporting the creation of the Network. Subsequently, the Steering Committee will assume this responsibility and define the continuity of this scheme.
The Technical Secretariat is responsible for presenting annual reports on activities, results, and budget execution, and may prepare specific reports to support decision-making.
Specific Objectives
The Bioamazonía Network promotes pan-Amazonian scientific cooperation to strengthen capacities, generate knowledge, and develop solutions aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of Amazonian biodiversity. Its specific objectives are:
To promote integration through dialogue and knowledge exchange among its members.
Strengthen the technical capacity of institutes through collective learning initiatives and the mobility of researchers and postgraduate students.
Promote the conservation of biodiversity and the development of the Amazonian bioeconomy through collaborative programs and projects.
Communicate the Network's activities and results.
